Responsibilities: Supervise and oversee all aspects of grower management, including daily mandatory required care responsibilities. These responsibilities include removing pigs that have died over night, walking through the pens twice daily and administering treatment to sick pigs immediately, checking feeder, temperature, and fan settings daily (and adjusting as necessary), and checking water flow daily. Along with these daily responsibilities, the Unit Manager is responsible for following these good management practices: – Power wash and disinfect inside of facilities and feeders prior to admittance of each lot. – Establish a favorable temperature environment in the facilities. – Fill pens according to size, sort for pigs that don’t compete well in their own pen, or animals that are sick and need extra care. – Collect and properly dispose of all dead animals. – Maintain access roads to facilities in good working order. – Implement rodent and fly control procedures. – Maintain foot disinfectant pans at all entry doors and require use of those pans prior to admittance into facilities. – Keep dogs, cats, and other domestic animals out of facilities. – Practice ethical treatment of animals. – Maintain and forward (on a timely basis) the required reports, including: Monthly Inventory Report, Daily management Log, and Feed Usage Report. – Follow feeding specifications.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to organize and maintain herd health records and ability to communicate with management personnel. Knowledge of routine building maintenance and repairs is helpful. Must have a good understanding of pig flows and animal husbandry/doctoring skills.
Experience: Previous experience in swine production necessary.
Education and Training: Associate’s degree from an agricultural or technical school, with a major in animal production desired.

Ledger Swine Farms Inc.– Williamsburg, Iowa Farrow –finish system that is PIC Boar Affiliate herd producing Natural Service Boars. LSF handles all responsibilities relating to production, orders, invoicing, payment collection, delivery and customer service. This position will involve all daily activities related to management of wean-finish and off-test boar unit. An opportunity to become heavily engaged in all production aspects related to swine genetics.

Responsibilities

1) Daily chores which includes but is not limited to walking pens and inspecting all pigs, waters and feeder settings.

2) Treating and identifying any sick or unthrifty pigs.

3) Keep vaccination and treatment records according to PQA level III guidelines.

4) Closely inspect boars, monitor for defects or injuries and take appropriate action.

5) Monitor bulk bin levels and place feed orders at on site feed mill.

6) Inspect, maintain and repair all equipment and facilities. If equipment needs outside service or repairs notify farm manager.

7) Record all activities of each individual group. Ex; movement, treatments, deaths.

8) Coordinate all pig movements, sales of markets, off-testing of boars, movement of boars to off-test and sales unit.

9) Pressure wash rooms, alleys and equipment between groups.

10) Keep office, shower and storage areas clean and organized on a weekly basis.

11) Maintain all the appropriate records and reports on timely basis.

12) Handle all daily activities of off-test and sales units. Include inspecting hogs, cleaning and movements.

13) Assist farm manager with weaning, sow movement and any other required activities.

14) Assist with farm remodel and improvement activities.

15) Report directly to farm manager for direction and responsibilities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

11) Employees may not live on a premise where pigs are kept, nor may they live with another person who works with swine. They may not have daily contact with pigs other than those owned by Ledger Swine Farms.

12) Employee must meet bio-security requirements established by Ledger Swine Farms.

13) Employee will be required to review Ledger Swine Farms Inc. employee handbook and sign form that they understand employment criteria.

EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION

Salary – Will be based on employee experience and qualifications. Payment will be every other Friday. Current base salary of $650/wk. Additional compensation is based on job performance and profitability of LSF. Vacation – 5 days paid + 3 paid Holidays. Vacation days must be used yearly, or they will be forfeited. $150 / month health insurance stipend. Job performance evaluation at the end of 6 months. 60 day trial period with performance review.
